IMPORTANT DATES:
Notification of Intent to Submit: May 1
2006, but preferably much sooner
Submission of tentative title and
short abstract: June 1 2006
Deadline Date for Submissions: 30
June 2006
BACKGROUND:
Intelligent systems have been shown to increase their effectiveness by
adapting to their individual users. In recent years, it has been recognized
that affective factors can play an important role in this adaptation. Such
factors include both long-term personality traits and shorter-term states such
as dispositions, attitudes, interpersonal stances, moods, and emotions (K.
Scherer, HUMAINE website). Research on modeling affect and on adapting to
affective factors has matured considerably over the past several years, so
that even designers of commercial products are now considering the inclusion
of components that take affect into account.
CALL FOR PAPERS:
Papers presenting original contributions pertinent to affective modeling
and adaptation are sought for a special issue of the journal "User Modeling
and User-Adapted Interaction: The Journal of Personalization Research” (UMUAI)
published by Springer.
Both papers that address theoretical issues and
application papers that present novel implemented systems are solicited.
Theoretical papers should present novel and evaluated techniques and
formalisms, or empirical studies relevant to affective computing.
Application papers should describe an implemented and evaluated system
that models affective factors or adapts its behavior based on such factors,
and should clearly present the advances represented by the system.
Contributions are solicited in all areas of affective computing, with
particular interest in the following areas:
recognition of affective states from user actions, language,
speech, facial expressions, gestures, body posture, biosignals, or from a
combination of various sources;
models of affective states and their integration with other
components of the user model;
theories about the impact of affective states on user behavior and
the implications of the theories regarding appropriate affective computing
techniques;
systems that employ affective computing in applications such as
automobile navigation, learning and education, call centers, health care, and
advice-giving;
methods for evaluating affective models and systems.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
Submissions to the special issue should follow
the UMUAI submission instructions which can be obtained from the following web
site:
http://www.umuai.org/paper_submission.html
Electronic submissions are preferred. Each submission should note that it
is intended for the Special Issue on Affective Modeling and Adaptation.
We
recommend that papers not exceed 40 pages (including figures and references).
Authors should consult the guest editors of the issue if they feel that
they need additional space.
Potential authors are asked to notify the guest editors (Sandra Carberry
and Fiorella de Rosis) as soon as possible of their intent to submit an
article.
Sometime thereafter (but not later than a month prior to the
submission deadline), they should submit a tentative title and short abstract
(which can be altered for the actual submission) to enable the formation of a
panel of appropriate reviewers.
REVIEW PROCESS:
Submissions will undergo the normal review
process, and will be reviewed by three established researchers selected from a
panel of reviewers formed for the special issue.
Barring unforeseen
problems, authors can expect to be notified regarding the review results
within 2-3 months of submission.
