HUMAINE: Human-Machine Interaction Network of Excellence on Emotions

A EC Research Project in the scope of the Information Societies Technology Programme.

Duration: 2004-2006

Objectives:

The general aim of the network is to equip European teams to develop systems that register, model and/or influence human emotional and emotion-related states. We call these emotion-oriented systems.
The network will underpin sound long-term development of these systems by clarifying the scientific, cultural and ethical underpinnings of emotion-oriented computing; developing accessible literature and standards based on that understanding; and establishing enduring relationships among research groups in the key areas of information technology and the science of emotion.

Exemplars developed so far.

MagiCster: Embodied Believable Agents

A EC Research Project in the scope of the Information Societies Technology Programme (IST-1999-29078).

Duration: 2000-2003

Objectives:

  • to design a believable conversational interface agent which makes use of gaze, facial expression, gesture and body posture as well as speech in a synchronised fashion;
  • to evaluate the use of the conversational agent in laboratory conditions to determine which aspects of the embodied agent are important for what types of human-computer interaction;
  • to develop and document the agent architecture and components to enable other research and development teams to prototype and evaluate new versions of the agent interface in new domains and for novel tasks.
