Carmelo Ardito is assistant professor at the Computer Science Department of the University of Bari "Aldo Moro", where he teaches courses for the Computer Science curricula and teaches Computer Science for the Economics curriculum.
He studied at the University of Bari and he got the Laurea (3 years degree course) in Computer Science in June 2002, the Laurea specialistica (2 years post-graduate course) in Computer Science in October 2004, the PhD in Computer Science in May 2008.
His research interests are in Human-Computer Interaction, particularly Interaction with Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems, Usability and User Experience, Information Visualization, End-User Development. He is co-author more than 60 papers published in journals, international conferences and collections.
He has supervised many theses in Computer Science.
Since 2001 he has been involved in various research projects of the Department of Computer Science (De_VISU, VICE, Stressafish, CHAT, DIPIS, Learning for All, LOGIN, VINCENTE) sponsored by EU and Italian organizations.
During February-May 2007 he has been visiting scientist at HIIT, "Helsinki Institute for Information and Technology", Finland. During this period he started working on large multitouch displays. A paper co-authored with HIIT researchers received the Best Paper Award at the MUM (Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia) 2007 conference. He has organized a research group of the IVU Lab @Brindisi developing and experimenting in the field various multitouch systems.
He was invited speaker at the “New Media Technologies: International FORUM among Museums, Universities and Companies” conference that took place, in November 2009, at “Universidad Autonoma de Madrid”. He was also invited by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid for the seminar “Enabling interactive exploration of cultural heritage: an experience of designing systems for mobile devices”.
During June 2010, sponsored by EU through the COST action IC0904 "Twintide", he visited the HCI research group at the University of Patras, Greece, working on "designing games for visiting cultural heritage sites".
He was invited in June 2011 to Autrans (France), for a talk to the Game Based Learning School (GBL) 2011, where he also co-organized, with Christos Sintoris from the HCI research group at the University of Patras, two practical sessions for designing games for learning ancient history.
In June 2012 he has been visiting professor at the Department of Computer and Information Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.
In May 2014 he has been guest lecturer at the Institute of Informatics of Tallinn University to give a course on "Technologies and Methodologies for End-User Development" within the PhD program "Information Society Technologies".
In the frame of the Erasmus-IP EU programme, in 2013 and 2014 he has been responsible, for the University of Bari, of the management of the SURGEOM (SUbject-driven Role-Guided Externalization of Organizational Models) project. The final goal of SURGEOM is the organization of a two-week summer school, in which he also participates as teacher. The school is attended by 40 students coming from 6 European countries. The coordinator of the SURGEOM project is the Johannes Kepler University of Linz (Austria), which also hosts the event during the last two weeks of July.
Carmelo Ardito attended several National and International Conferences to present his published works, including CHI, MobileHCI, AVI. He was in the local organization of INTERACT 2005 Conference, collaborating to editing of both Proceedings and Adjunct Proceedings of the conference. He was co-chair of the demo track at the ACM International conference on Interaction Design and Children IDC 2009. He was in the Local Organizing Committee of the closing conference of the COST294 MAUSE project that took place in Brindisi, Italy, during March 2009. He was Local Arrangement Chair of the third International Symposium on End-User Development (IS-EUD 2011). He co-organized, with Prof. Nikolaos Avouris of the University of Patras, the "DEG: Involving End Users and Domain Experts in Design of Educational Games" workshop at the IS-EUD 2011 conference. He was co-chair of the poster and demo track at the ACM International conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces AVI 2014. He is (has been) either member of the Program Committee or reviewer of several International Conference (AVI, CHI, HCI International, HCSE, HSI, IASTED, INTERACT, SEKE, TEI, UbiComp, VL/HCC, VLC, VIIP). He is also in the reviewer board of several international journal (ToCHI, IJHCS, JVLC, JSS, UAIS, HIJ, MTAP).
He has been meta-reviewer for NordiCHI in the editions held in 2012 and 2014.
He is Full Paper co-chair at IS-EUD 2015, hold in Madrid in May 2015.
Carmelo Ardito is one of the inventors of the patent n. 1401512 that concerns a multimedia framework and a method to support the visit of a site of interest, such as an archaeological or a natural park.
