From March 2005: Full Professor of Computer Science, University of Bari.
November 1998 - February 2005: Associate Professor of Computer Science, University of Bari
July 1991 - October 1998: Assistant Professor of Computer Science, University of Bari
September - December 1992: collaboration as assistant specialist with the Machine Learning group headed by prof. Michael J. Pazzani of the Institute of Computer Science, University of California, Irvine.
July 1987 - June 1991: collaboration with the Machine Learning Group headed by prof. Floriana Esposito, Department of Computer Science, University of Bari, Italy. January - April 1989: attendance of some regular courses at SASIAM (School for Advanced Studies on Industrial and Applied Mathematics), Tecnopolis, Valenzano (BA), Italy.

Awards and prizes

December 1987: IBM Italy prize for the best laurea theses in Computer Science.
2004: IBM Faculty Award.

He is currently involved in teaching several courses for the following curricula:

Research interests

Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery: statistical and logical foundations, predictive and descriptive methods (induction of decision and model trees, rule learning, association rule discovery, causal models, clustering), model evaluation, visual approaches. Inductive logic programming and Multi-relational Data Mining: recursive theory learning, generalization models and theory revision, relational learning from numeric data, relational regression, relational association rules and emerging patterns, relational clustering, propositionalization, relational transductive learning. Symbolic data analysis: dissimilarity measures, flexible matching, classification. Spatial Data Mining: feature extraction from maps, map interpretation, spatial classification/regression/association/clustering. Document image analysis and recognition: applications of machine learning and data mining to blocks classification, document classification, document understanding, layout analysis, reading order detection. Web Mining: feature selection, hierarchical and multidimensional classification of web documents. Bioinformatics: applications of data mining methods to biomedial literature, information extraction from biomedical texts. Network Traffic Analysis: feature extraction, anomaly detection.

He is author of more than 150 papers which have been published in international journals and refereed Conference/Workshop Proceedings.
