General Info

Since December 2016, I am in tenure track for associate professorship in Computer Science at the University of Bari. I obtained the Italian Habilitation for the functions of Associate Professor for the Scientific Sector “01/B1 – Informatics” on January 29th, 2014, (Application: round 2012). Before I have been appointed as assistant professor at the University of Bari on January 2016 and I have been research fellow at the University of Bari since May 2007 to December 2015. Along the years, I have been also invited researcher in several universities and international research institutes such as the University of Koblenz-Landau, the University of Oxford, INRIA, the University of Poznan, FBK among the others (click here for mode details). My research activity targets the integration of inductive and deductive reasoning in order to discover useful patterns in data sets with rich background knowledge (ontologies). In particular, I have pioneered the formalization and application of Machine Learning methods to Description Logics, with the final goal of improving ontology mining as used in the Semantic Web. I started my research on January 2004 at the University of Bari, where I obtained my Ph.D. on May 4th 2007, defending the dissertation titled "Similarity-based Learning Methods for the Semantic Web" (slides of presentation downloadable), supervised by Prof. Floriana Esposito.
